Spirit of New Zealand Goes North for a Refit

Spirit arrived in Whangarei at the end of great 10 day voyage, full of enthusiastic (if not somewhat tired as well) Rangatahi.  It was then a case of preparing her to come out of the water and for work to start.  Everything to date is going well and the ship yard and our team up in Whangarei have made good progress.  To date the following work has been undertaken:

      • Blasting of the hull is well underway

      • The bow sprit and the jib boom have been removed ready to be checked, stripped and revarnished

    • The existing Sewage tank has been cut open ready for the installation of the new sewage Treatment plant to be installed.

The The Spirit of Adventure Trust is very appreciative of a grant from The Lion Foundation which has made this refit possible.

“Better than ever” hockey turf re-opens at Stadium Horizon!

Chair of the Central Bay Hockey Charitable Trust, Lesley Immink is delighted to report that the upgrade of the hockey turf in Whakatane has been successfully completed by artificial turf construction company, Tiger Turf New Zealand. The work involved repairing the base and replacing the turf carpet, which should give us another 15-20 years of playing.

Stadium Horizon hockey turf was opened in April 2005 with an estimated lifespan of fifteen years before replacement of the turf carpet was necessary. By late 2021 it was apparent that spot patching was no longer sustainable for the safety of players so the upgrade turf project was activated.

While the Central Bay Hockey Association is responsible for the everyday running of Stadium Horizon, the Trust is responsible for the overall financial management. The Trust receive hockey lease fees from the association and has been saving in advance the lease fees to assist with the turf replacement. However, what they had saved was not going to be enough so applying to external grant agencies was needed.

Lesley says, “the value of the turf upgrade is approximately $500,000 and we are extremely grateful to The Lion Foundation for providing a generous $200,000 grant contribution which enabled the project to proceed.”

Paul Hayes, Communication and Engagement Manager at the Lion Foundation says, “we are delighted to have been able to support this project. It is a great example of how the community funding model can provide positive outcomes for local people. The Horizon Stadium Hockey turf is a valuable community asset that will be used by hundreds of players from across the Eastern Bay for many years to come, and we are proud to have made a significant contribution.”

Francis Monopoli – Icon of Nelson

Our Lion Foundation team were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Francis Monopoli. Francis was an integral part of the Nelson community and in particularly the hospitality community. Many of our team have been fortunate to get to know Francis and Marg over the years and they have become true friends to many. Francis and Marg have been long term supporters of the Lion Foundation, which has enabled support for numerous local community groups and initiatives.

The world has lost a great man and our love and thoughts are with Marg, the family, the Nelson community and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Francis.

Rest in peace our friend.
